Hi. I'm Markus.

I'm a recovering architect who's done just about every job with 'data' in the title over the span of my career. I'm a highly experienced and versatile data professional with a wealth of knowledge and expertise gained from working in various roles across different regions including New Zealand, the US and Europe. I've worked with major financial institutions such as JP Morgan, Barclays and HSBC as well as well-known brands in the UK.

Companies usually ask me to provide comprehensive assessments of their data management and exploitation capabilities or help them to understand their readiness for key strategic programmes from a data perspective. I specialise in helping companies procure the next generation of data management tooling based on their very specific use cases.

Having worked in various data-centric roles throughout my career, I have developed a unique ability to identify simple yet effective solutions to 'data' problems that, more often than not, already exist within the organisations who've come to me for help. I firmly believe that the most effective way to unlock the value of an organisation's data is by helping them find their own way to address the problem and I take great satisfaction in the process.

Stabilise, align, and converge competing internal versions of FIX messaging standards and release headcount supporting those two standards, saving $400k per annum.
Align API, Data, and Information Architecture Strategies with a supporting proof of concept to support post-trade Record to Report processes and reduce developer headcount by 8, saving $500k per annum.

Interim Enterprise Architect

HSBC

At HSBC I delivered:

A framework and strategy to decommission 11,000 of the bank’s 27,000 applications as part of HSBC’s cloud migration strategy to GCP, resulting in a saving of £10m per annum.
Developed a Proof of Concept (POC) Data Analytics pipeline to ingest and wrangle data using ML-based tools for harvesting metadata and unifying data entities for use in controlled Data Marts, completed in days rather than months.
Rearchitected the metadata harvesting processes required for BCBS-239, removing a Deloitte team from the bank and saving £1m per annum.

I was also responsible for:

Overseeing the Visual Paradigm modelling platforms, including meta-model changes and standards definitions.
Managing the Data Architecture and Governance sections of the bank’s data policy.
Designing DevOps processes for Data, embedding Data Governance into their deliveries.
Representing HSBC at the FCA's Risk Reporting Hackathon.

As the Data Architecture Lead for the IB in the CDO office:

I created an IB Data Architecture practice, which rationalized several data workstreams across the IB, saving hundreds of thousands of pounds.
I supported the development of several strategies and roadmaps, including Data Architecture, Data Governance, Data Quality, and Data Modeling.
Additionally, I represented Barclays on industry bodies and managed the EA platform, which involved migrating the database, building meta-model extensions, and coaching other data modellers.

Data Management and Information Architecture Lead

JP MORGAN

As the Information Architecture lead for the Derivatives back office, managing teams in the US, Bournemouth and India, I led the redevelopment of the platform which:

Cut £600K PA in on prem storage costs and support PA.
Used existing frameworks the platform and increase the messaging throughput to 80k per hour and could be queried for data lineage delivered a part of the CI/CD process.
Supported an event-based solution for Liquidity management which reduced the headcount by 60 and saved the bank more than £5m PA.
Delivered a semantics led Regulatory Reporting tool used by the Global Compliance team in their discussions with the SEC and FCA streamlining the post trade Record to Report processes.
Owned the UML modelling platform, leading the model store’s upgrade, and developing the meta-model assets to support model driven engineering to support various integration styles including APIs, Protobuff and XML based Rest messaging.
